Yesterday I came to visit my ex-Vice director as he had thyroid cancer. When I first heard the news, I felt pity for him. He is a rich and generous guy, though he's not my direct boss, we worked together on various occasions. Suddenly everything seems meaningless for him.
Turned out that he has already been through the operation and it was successful. When I came with other ex-coworkers, he's already been able to joke like nothing has ever happened. So instead of carefully-worded comforts, we had a real good chat together.
He's lucky, I feel happy for him.
Eventually, every single person will have to face death. I don't know if I can prepare myself to meet it, but I hope when the time comes, I can calmly say: Life is beautiful, I've tasted it. Now I'm ready.

Well, I suppose that is a calmer reaction to death than "What the fuck is that thi..."
The key is to enjoy your life whilst you have it and behave in such a way that at least a few people will be sorry to hear that you arrived at the end of your journey!
It's a grounded approach.
The visit did remind me how fragile life may be and all encounters should be embraced (more keenly).
