I tell you what the hell just happened. For the second year running, UK's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest received zero points from the Europe-wide public vote. Last night in the Swiss city of Basel, UK's entry, Remember Monday's What the Hell Just Happened?, finished a very disappointing 19th place in the final of 26 entrants. The rest of Europe just can't forgive us for Brexit!
Though well sung as you would expect from the three women making up Remember Monday who between them have lots of experience of performing in West End musicals, the song is terrible. It's a country pop number. While pop music goes down well in Eurovision, country music doesn't. The song has far too many gear changes; it's like five songs rolled into one. It felt like a song written by a committee.
Remember Monday's What the Hell Just Happened?:
Highlights of last night's Eurovision were Sweden's song about saunas, KAJ's Bara Badu Bastu, and Estonia's song about coffee, Tommy Cash's Espresso Macchiato. Both were Eurovision at its trashiest best!
My favourite song was Finland's Erika Vikman singing Ich Komme. It wasn't so much the song I liked but more its raunchy staging. Very Euro-porn trash!

A crew member of Eurovision was hit with paint as he stopped two protesters from getting onto the stage while Israel's Yuval Raphael was singing New Day Will Rise. Israel did finish second on the night.
Austria won last night's Eurovision. Johannes Pietsch, aka JJ, sang a very operatic ballad titled Wasted Love, which means that next year's Eurovision will be held in Vienna. Eurovision will be 70 years old then!
The UK is needed to seriously get its act together if it wants to be taken seriously at Eurovision. The main problem is that no top British artist wants to jeopardise their reputation by entering Eurovision. There's no chance of Adele, Annie Lennox, Coldplay, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Harry Styles, Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Sam Fender and The Rolling Stones being persuaded to perform on the Eurovision stage. However, I think if the BBC stuffed Robert Smith with a lot of money, The Cure's The Lovecats would comfortably win next year's Eurovision if entered. Nearly all Europeans, bar the French, would love this great pop song sung by a goth!

Never really paid attention to the contest, but agree both your songs are crap. The only comment i noticed on the contest was Gideon Levy's of Haaretz , saying the amount of interest shown at this time in Israel in the contest shows the moral decay of its society.
Eurovision is trashily crap, that's why I like it!

Not all of it, of course! of course! What IΓ’β¬β’ve never liked is Eurovision, I donΓ’β¬β’t see the point of a song contest by countries. But if some people find it entertaining, thatΓ’β¬β’s fine. The first and last time I watched the Eurovision contest was the year I moved back to Spain, and I was 16! A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then! 
I just love the trash of Eurovision. I don't take the contest seriously. It brings people together.

One of my news podcasts talked a bit about Eurovision the other day and claimed that songs with a "folky" element that feature accordians do well in the competition. That surprised me as it is not at all my impression of the kind of music that's performed at Eurovision!
I have to disagree with that podcaster's opinion. Though folk songs are entered, particularly by Eastern European countries, they rarely do well. It's kitsch pop and rock songs that generally do well.
If I can just do a rejoinder (you do make me think). That podcaster was probably correct up to 1974. But when Abba won with Waterloo, that changed everything. Musical artists increasingly saw and still see Eurovision as a way to launch themselves into the wider world.

@smartasswoman Unfortunately the New York Times link didn't work. I didn't see many if any accordions in last night's Eurovision. Now I can't pretend I was watching out for accordions, but I'm pretty sure no song that did well featured an accordion or featured an accordion that was key to the song.

@OddsAgainst I remember very fondly when things weren't approved here and an edit could be made any time. Now I readily accept there has to be a review process, especially how the law is going, but a review can take a long time here especially if politics is involved.
@OddsAgainst I don't know whether it was before your time, it was when the so-called Dating and Community got split. And conversations were almost real time. But someone fucked up by posting something probably very illegal and the site shut down for a good week while it had an audit of what was posted on the site. Now law and regulation has caught up with the site and other sites, so it's delayed conversation.
