An orgy is, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, "secret ceremonial rites held in honor of an ancient Greek or Roman deity and usually characterized by ecstatic singing and dancing", "drunken revelry", "a sexual encounter involving many people" or "excessive indulgence ... in something especially to satisfy an inordinate appetite or craving". Wikipedia defines an orgy as a "sex party where guests freely engage in open and unrestrained sexual activity or group sex."

Below are nine bits of orgy trivia:

1. Etmologically, orgies is a French term derived from the Latin 'orgia' and Ancient Greek '?????' terms, meaning mysteries or secret rites.
2. It's claimed that the world's largest orgy was involved 500 people in Tokyo, Japan. In 2006, 250 couples had sex as a couplings for the 500 Person Sex porn video directed by Yukitsugu Tsuchiya. (I'm not sure 250 simultaneous acts of twosome sex constitute an orgy!)
3. According to Google's AI Overview (powered by Gemini), there is "The Five-Person Rule" which states that "an orgy is sometimes specifically defined as a sexual encounter involving a minimum of five people engaged in cross-coupling acts." (Gemini's words very closely resembles (plagiarises?) the words of a contributor on the Quora question-and-answer website.)
4. It's often believed that in ancient Greek times, orgia involved sex, but while sex may have happened, the main purpose of orgia was, according to Wikipedia, "to achieve an ecstatic union with the divine."
5. A cuntfest is a slang term for a lesbian orgy.
6. In January 2025 the British porn star Bonnie Blue, born in Nottingham, broke the world record for the biggest gangbang when she had sex with 1,057 men in 12 hours. That's roughly one man every 40 seconds!
7. A circle jerk party in which a group of men standing in a circle masturbate, especially if they masturbate each other, can be regarded as an orgy and even a gay orgy.
8. Animals other than humans (eg bats, bonobos, flying foxes, horseshoe crabs) partake in orgies though generally for reproduction purposes and not for recreational purposes.
9. Punctured orgy equilibrium theory is a public policy theory explaining stable policy-making with only marginal changes only to be punctuated by an orgy of forces leading to radical change. (I used to teach this theory to students sometimes after participating in an orgy at a sex party in the weekend before my policy analysis class!)
